Watch a Master Barber Give This Man His First Haircut in 5 Years

"It was kind of nerve-racking coming up here today," says the client. "Too late now!"

While most people can relate to the feeling of needing a haircut after being in lockdown for months on end, some guys have been taking it way further. In a new video on the Beardbrand channel, Jake Hunter from Men’s Club Barbershop in Philadelphia gives a haircut to a man who hasn’t sat in a barber’s chair in five whole years, but thinks it is finally time that his long hair and beard get a much-needed style update.

“It was kind of nerve-racking coming up here today,” says the client. “Too late now!”

Hunter starts shearing away around the back and sides with a number 3 guard to immediately clear some of that excess length. “That’s a lot of hair, dude,” he says, as lock after lock fall away and start amassing on the floor.

He then takes a zero guard and creates a solid line around the client’s head, which he will then use as a guide for giving him a skin fade. He trims everything below the line so that it’s clean and smooth, then gets to work on blending the fade. “I’m going to fade down,” he says, “so I’m going to close my clipper just a little bit each time and I’m going to go a little lower each time I close it… You just have to use a little extra care.”

Once the fade is done, Hunter wets the remaining hair on top and trims that, before moving on to grooming the beard, cutting off a lot of the length and giving it more definition and shape so that it ends up looking more stylish and flattering. Finally, he blow-dries the hair on top and gives the hairline and beardline a straight razor finish.

The transformation is a drastic one—by the end of the video, the man getting out of the chair looks like a completely different person than the one who sat down.

“Welcome back!” Says Hunter.
